Exale Brewing Unveils The Black Eel - Dalston’s Newest Social Hub
Dalston’s newest pub, The Black Eel, is set to open this October, bringing together the best of old East London charm and modern social energy. The project is the latest creation from Exale Brewing, who continue to expand their community-led approach to pubs across the capital.
Taking over the Grade II listed home of one of the East End’s oldest pie and mash shops, The Black Eel blends history, design and hospitality in a way only Exale could deliver. With its original 1862 mosaic doorway, arched windows and iconic tiled frontage, the building is being reimagined as a welcoming, contemporary space that still nods to its roots in London’s working-class culture.
A Landmark Reinvented
Inside, The Black Eel is spread across a 250-cover interior that pairs preserved period features with a fresh, modern aesthetic. Alongside the main bar, guests will find a private karaoke room, darts and shuffleboard areas, comfortable lounge zones and flexible event spaces - all designed to create a sense of warmth and connection.
Outdoors, one of East London’s largest hidden beer gardens awaits. Seating 150 guests, it features leafy nooks, sheltered spaces and even a pétanque court - a clear invitation to linger through every season.
A Kitchen with Character
Heading up the kitchen is Riley’s, the new venture from chef Billy Fisher. With over 15 years of experience spanning leading kitchens and creative residencies across London, Fisher’s cooking is all about bold flavours, seasonal produce and relaxed hospitality.
Expect comforting, flavour-forward dishes such as steamed mussels with red onion, pork ribs with pickles and hot honey, or a celeriac roast with hazelnut crumb. The dessert line-up includes Basque cheesecake with toffee sauce and a vibrant autumn Eton Mess. Sundays will see Riley’s take on the traditional roast, pairing Norfolk-sourced meats and organic British veg with modern flair.
The Drinks
Of course, The Black Eel wouldn’t be an Exale venue without exceptional beer. The bar will showcase Exale’s creative, modern range, from hazy IPAs to fruited sours, alongside a selection of guest beers, craft cocktails, natural wines and low/no alcohol options.
A New Chapter for East London Pubs
For Exale Brewing, The Black Eel represents a confident next step in reviving the social heart of East London’s pub culture. Following the success of Exale Tap, Three Colts Tavern and The William the Fourth, this fourth venue continues the brewery’s mission to build spaces that bring people together — pubs that feel local, inclusive and full of life.
Blending creative design with quality beer and food, The Black Eel is set to become a standout destination for Dalston - a place where London’s heritage meets the modern-day community pub.
Bookings are now open, with reservations recommended but walk-ins warmly welcomed.
