Five Points Brewing Celebrates British Beer Heritage with Historic Mild Collaboration

This May, Five Points Brewing, one of London’s most respected craft breweries, will partner with Turning Point Brew Co. (Knaresborough) to celebrate the enduring legacy of traditional British beer. Their collaboration will shine a spotlight on the rich history of British brewing through the release of two distinct Milds, each inspired by recipes from different eras in brewing history.

While the beer industry has seen a surge in innovation and an explosion of new beer styles, there’s been a significant shift back to traditional British styles like Mild, which has experienced a resurgence in recent years. The 2024 SIBA Independent Beer Report highlighted a +10% year-on-year growth in cask production by small brewers since 2020, reflecting an increased consumer interest in sessionable ABVs and time-honoured brewing techniques.

In this context, Five Points is thrilled to return to its brewing heritage, working alongside Turning Point to bring to life two Milds that reflect both historical and contemporary influences. The first, brewed by Turning Point, will be based on a recipe from 1895, originally from the defunct Rose’s Brewery in Malton, North Yorkshire, which Aron McMahon, co-founder of Turning Point, discovered in the archives while working there.

“I wanted to bring this historic recipe back to life, but I knew it required more than just brewing the beer as it was,” says McMahon. “That’s why we reached out to Five Points for their expertise in creating beers that are both modern and rooted in tradition.”

Greg Hobbs, Co-founder and Director of Brewing at Five Points, echoes this sentiment:

“Brewing historical beers with modern ingredients is an exciting way to keep our brewing heritage alive. These two Milds, inspired by recipes a century apart, offer a glimpse into how British brewing has evolved over the years.”

While Turning Point will brew the original Rose’s recipe, Five Points will craft a Mild inspired by a recipe from 1995, providing a unique opportunity to compare two versions of the same style - one rooted in the late 19th century, the other born in the 1990s. Both beers are intended to be enjoyed side by side, allowing drinkers to explore the evolution of Mild and celebrate the deep connection between tradition and innovation.

The beers will be officially launched on April 24th at Five Points and Turning Point venues, aligning with CAMRA’s “Mild In May” initiative. From there, the Milds will be available at pubs and festivals nationwide, as well as through each brewery’s webshop.
